to come out – se assumir, sair do armário
The original phrase is to come out (of the closet), which in Portuguese means sair do armário. Although you might hear that in Brazil, se assumir is a term much more common. You can also say assumir sua homossexualidade.
When Ricky Martin came out, it was everywhere in the news. (Quando Ricky Marti se assumiu gay, saiu em todo lugar.)
* Jim from Qualidade de Vida explained that come out can also be used when you announce your position about something.
Lula came out in favor of raising the minimum salary.
